Still, it is Monday and I'm glad the you could join me for The Really Crafty Link Party #53! Link up to show us what you've been working on lately too and browse around for what everyone else is sharing.

This is a party, so try to visit at least a couple of other links and share the party on social media too. The more, the merrier!

How to make your own cake stands

Hello, and welcome to this week's edition of the You Can Do-It-Yourself series. If you haven't heard about this series I'm bringing to the blog in 2017, you can read about it here

One of my resolutions for this year is to learn to make cakes - not that I don't know exactly how to make a cake, but I need practice, I need to find recipes I can trust to work every time, and I want to make professional looking cakes I can bring to birthday parties and family celebrations, and be proud of.

So, following that line of thinking, if I'm going to make great cakes, I'm going to need great cake stands, right? And the best ones, just like the cakes, are always those that can be made at home.

How to make your own cake stands, DIY series

All of these are pretty easy to make and come with instructions for everyone to be able to replicate them. And because I know not everyone has the same crafty skills, there lots of different alternatives included.

Check them all out below:

(Almost) Wordless Wednesday - the beach in January

As we've been enjoying a string of very cold but sunny days, last weekend we went to the beach.

(Almost) Wordless Wednesday - the beach in January

Truth be told, we were all bundled up and even then we couldn't stay for long because of the bitter wind, but it was our first visit to the ocean in 2017.

A bed for Mr. Penguin

In the long standing tradition at our house that every doll and stuffed animal is supposed to have its own sleeping accommodations, my son asked me to make a bed for Mr. Penguin.

Mr. Penguin is...well, I'm not sure what he is exactly, though he certainly doesn't look like a penguin to me. He's been named Mr. Penguin by my kids, though, so who am I to judge?

What ever he is, he's small enough to fit in a basket I already had around, so it was the perfect match: Mr. Penguin got his bed and I found a use for the old basket.

No tutorial here, I just winged the whole thing. I used green felt for the lining, with a bit of polyester filling at the bottom of the basket (because we wanted Mr. Penguin to be comfortable), and then some green polka dot fabric for the exterior covers. Everything came from my stash, so it was a really inexpensive project.

It just took me about twenty minutes to make and even though it isn't perfect because I didn't bother with exact measurements, everyone was happy.

Easy one bowl shrimp farfalle

This one bowl shrimp farfalle is very quick and easy to make, and it's also a perfect lunch alternative to pack and bring to the office.

Easy one bowl shrimp farfalle

Ingredients:
  • 150 grams of farfalle (or any other pasta you prefer)
  • 200 grams of shelled shrimp (I usually buy frozen)
  • olive oil
  • two or three cloves of garlic
  • two teaspoons of garlic powder
  • one teaspoon of dried oregano
  • one tablespoon of white wine
  • salt to taste

Instructions:
  •  cover the bottom of a pan with olive oil, add the garlic cloves

  • once the olive oil is hot, add the shrimp, the salt, the white wine and the garlic powder and let it boil for about 10 minutes (add a bit of water or more olive oil if you think the mixture is too dry)
  • in the meantime, boil the pasta in hot water with salt, one tablespoon of olive oil and the oregano
  • once everything is cooked, drain the pasta, pour the shrimp (and their sauce) over it and mix

Serve warm, or divide into portions and put in the fridge.
